What Does "Let's Go Brandon" Mean? | Meme Explained

On October 2, 2021, NASCAR driver Brandon Brown won his first Xfinity Series race at Talladega Superspeedway. After the race, he was interviewed about his win by a sports reporter. In the background, the crowd could be heard chanting loudly, but not particularly clearly, at least at first.

The reporter initially suggested they were chanting “Let’s go, Brandon” in celebration of the driver. However, it became increasingly obvious as the interview wore on that what they were really saying was “[Insert-Four-Letter-Word Here] Joe Biden.”

From there, the chant took on a life of its own, popping up as a meme that is now practically unavoidable. Essentially, saying “Let’s Go Brandon” means, and is now code for, what the crowd was chanting behind Brandon Brown (see image at left).

For those who did not support President Biden in the last presidential race, “Let’s Go Brandon” has become a “G-rated” way of disagreeing with the president and his policies. In fact, the chant’s popularity among conservative voters has spawned an entire cottage industry of meme-based merchandise, including Let’s Go Brandon” hats, shirts, hoodies and car bumper sticker decals. It’s a combination of a not-particularly-secret handshake and and not-so-inside joke within right-wing communities.

Other Presidential Memes, Past and Present

Funny George Washington Meme

Becoming the subject of less-than-positive memes is nothing new for Presidents, or really any high-ranking government official, even if they weren’t necessarily called “memes” during the time they were in office. In fact, even America’s very first president, George Washington, has become the subject of modern memes.

Some of the very first presidential memes include those directed at Grover Cleveland (who was believed to have fathered a child out of wedlock) and Thomas Jefferson, who was accused of betraying his wife as well as producing illegitimate heirs. In fact, Jefferson and Andrew Jackson were both the subject of vulgar poems regarding their less-than-Presidential activities.

More recently, however, the internet has created a space where presidential memes -- funny, mean, or both -- are able to be rapidly created and shared, especially over social media channels like Twitter and Facebook. President Barack Obama is generally considered to be the first American president to have to contend with a constant barrage of memes, which only increased during the years Donald Trump was in office  For better or for worse, social media is able to amplify and spread new political memes like wildfire -- including “Let’s Go Brandon” memes.
